The Term of Technology

Term Four has been off to a fantastic start here in Room 1! This week we have begun our two weeks of swimming and that has been fun so far. For the first three weeks of the term we have had a technology focus. We have created our own technology process which we follow whenever we create or build something.
We have used this to help solve some serious problems… we had to build a bridge that would support the weight of a small car, so fun! Next we had to lower some fragile medicine down a cliff to some poor climbers who had fallen! Well drop an egg from the top of the slide but you get the idea! We are looking forward to the rest of the year and the exciting times ahead…

Writing in response to Holes

As a class we have begun reading the novel Holes. It is a fascinating story that we are very excited about. So far we have only read a few chapters but have learned quite a few things about our main character Stanley Yelnats. For our writing this week we have written a paragraph that describes what it would be like digging a hole in the hot, lonely Camp Green Lake, just like Stanley…

Polyfest and Stumpery Visit

What an amazing day we had! Today was the big performance at Polyfest 2014. The whole of Winton School performed 5 songs in front of a huge audience at Stadium Southland. Our song Ka Pioioi sounded terrific. We had a great experience and hope to be able to perform again.

Before we got to the stadium we went to Queens Park and explored the bird aviary. After this we walked throug the very interesting stumpery and ate our lunch. It was great day out indeed!

Report Writing

This term we have been focussing on writing facts. Facts are statements that you cannot argue with and are true. We have had lots of opportunities to read and write about facts and we have written some reports of our own. Reports are pieces of writing that provide the audience with information about a topic. Have a great holiday and we will see you in Term 3.

Mondrian Art

This term we have looked at the art techniques of Piet Mondrian. He was an artist from The Netherlands who used lines and rectangles to create simple but stunning pieces of art. We drafted ours out with crayon before using paint on our final pieces. The use of black paper for lines makes our art really stand out. We hope you get a chance to come in and have a look.

Rights and Responsibilities at Winton School

One of our understandings this term is to be able to explain how people have rights and responsibilities within our school. This week we have been brainstorming many of the  roles within our school and the responsibilities that go with them. Today we interviewed Mr Wadsworth to find out exactly what his responsibilities as principal are. We found out that these include:

• Keeping all people at school safe. Including children and the staff
• Working with other teachers to help the children
• Planning ways to improve the school
• Helping decide how the school spends its money
• Making sure that children are achieving and having fun!
• Meeting with people to hear what they have to say. This includes our Board of Trustees and the management team
• To employ trusted teachers to help make Winton School even more amazing

We all had a great deal of fun researching this today. There was even some tricky questions we got to ask! As we continue we will look at many other responsibilities at school. Stay tuned…
